A career in one sentence
Making the systems behind population health hold together, one standard and one architecture at a time.
Ron started in health informatics in 1985, early enough to have built systems that predate the web, and long enough to have watched the sector reinvent the same handful of ideas several times. He spent the first stretch of his career inside a Canadian teaching-hospital ecosystem, then a decade at a national institute focused on partnership data modelling across provinces.
In 2003 he joined Canada Health Infoway, the federal corporation set up to accelerate a pan-Canadian electronic health record. He rose to Group Director of Architecture and stayed for fifteen years. Under that mandate the national reference architecture (the shared blueprint that made ten provincial systems interoperable rather than identical) became the design language for roughly CAD 2.1B of federal co-investment.
In parallel, he became the person that international bodies called when a country was ready to move from a digital-health strategy to an actual platform plan. Through a specialised UN agency and a global health authority he served as project lead and contributing editor of a widely used digital-health-platform handbook, and directly advised ministries across four continents.
He founded Parker Digital Health Consulting Inc. in 2018 to concentrate that experience (architecture, standards, governance) into a single independent practice. Since then he has continued to serve on the HL7 International Board (as Council Co-Chair), chair HL7 Canada, and represent Canada at ISO/TC 215, while advising programmes in South Asia, sub-Saharan Africa, the Gulf, and North America.
Ron is, in his other life, a pilot. He has served as Board Chair of the Shearwater Flight Centre. The habit of treating an architecture the way a captain treats a flight plan (checklists, cross-checks, and never assuming the weather stays the same) runs through his professional work as well.

Formative years in health informatics
Early clinical-information-systems work in Atlantic Canada, moving from hospital departmental systems into cross-provincial data-sharing designs. Co-chair of the Partnership Data Modeling Group at the Canadian Institute for Health Information (1998 – 2002).
2003 – 2017
Group Director of Architecture, Canada Health Infoway
Fifteen years leading the national reference architecture: the blueprint for a federated electronic-health-record system across ten provinces and three territories. The architecture governed roughly CAD 2.1B of federal co-investment during that period.
2014 – 2020
Digital-health platform work at UN scale
Project lead and contributing editor for a global digital-health-platform handbook produced with a UN specialised agency and a global health authority. The handbook has since been used by ministries in more than thirty countries as a reference for national platform design.

Independent practice from Halifax. Ministry-level advisory, national blueprints, and standards governance for programmes in North America, South Asia, sub-Saharan Africa, and the Gulf.

The captain and the architect.
Ron is a pilot, with years in the left seat of light aircraft, and past Board Chair of the Shearwater Flight Centre in Nova Scotia. The discipline of aviation shows up in how he runs an architecture engagement: pre-flight checklists, briefings before every leg, and an assumption that the weather can and will change.
It is not incidental. Clients who have flown with him say the same thing they say about his consulting: calm hands, clear communication, and someone who knows exactly what the aircraft (or the platform) can and cannot do.
